Francesca Taioli - There are many things to do in Trieste but if you like castle you can’t miss Miramare Castle, not far from downtown. The first impact of the Miramare Castle in Trieste – litterally “a castle that look to the see” – in a sunny day is exciting and it brings you back at the time of princes and princesses. The Miramare Castle stands between the blue of the sea and the green of the trees. Its white walls – that seem almost blinding in comparison to the colors of nature that surrounds it – enclose a love story, romantic and sad at the same time, that is able to touch deeply even today, centuries later. Il Castello di Miramare a Trieste Things to do in Trieste: Miramare Castle This mansion was commissioned in the second half of the nineteenth century by Maximilian of Habsburg for his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, and the two lived there together until their departure for Mexico. The unfortunate princess, however, had to return alone in Europe in a hurry to ask for help for the military campaign that her husband was leading in that distant land. Unfortunately her prayers were not successful and she waited in vain for the return of her lover, pining to madness and looking at the sea from the windows of her castle… Today, the Miramare castle and its grounds are open to the public and crowded by tourists who admire the beautifully decorated rooms, strolling in the park and enjoying the wonderful view. Right in the middle of the park there is the Castelletto.
